PHULKARI WORK

India is a land of variety and excellence when it comes to handloom products. Traditional weaves in fine counts, adornments that please the senses, color combinations that catch the eye, tribal art that baffles the mind or the intricacies and exquisite handiwork in fine display, speak volumes of the dedication and devotion of the country’s finest ethnic practitioners to uphold tradition and showcase flawless artistry and craftsmanship.

A classic example of such would be the Phulkari embroidery on fabrics like the Salwar Kameez etc., an offering from Punjab.

What is the Phulkari?

“Phul” means flower and “kari” means work. Phulkari, also known as “Gulkari”, is a rural tradition of Punjab where hand-made embroidery or intricate needle work with bright colored threads decorate fabrics like the salwar kameez, dupatta (odhini), shawl etc. Rural women of the state have been practicing this distinguishing art since the middle of 19th century, till date. Where earlier it used to be merely for beautifying average-looking fabrics for special occasion clothing, it is today an opportunity for many women to earn a decent living through Phulkari, since the fashion world has taken to it in a big way.
