EMBROIDERIES OF INDIA / PHULKARI WORK / INTRODUCTION

India is a land of variety and excellence when it comes to handloom products. A classic example of such would be the Phulkari embroidery on fabrics like the Salwar Kameez etc., an offering from Punjab.

“Phul” means flower and “kari” means work. Phulkari, also known as “Gulkari”, is a rural tradition of Punjab where hand-made embroidery or intricate needle work with bright colored threads decorate fabrics like the salwar kameez, dupatta (odhini), shawl etc. Rural women of the state have been practicing this distinguishing art since the middle of 19th century, till date. Where earlier it used to be merely for beautifying average-looking fabrics for special occasion clothing, it is today an opportunity for many women to earn a decent living through Phulkari, since the fashion world has taken to it in a big way.
