Unnati Silks and the Ikat process

Unnati has like so many others has also been enamoured by the Ikat process and chosen to give Ikat its place in the sun with a whole range of fabric varieties – sarees, salwar kameez, kurti-kurta, the novel designer stitched blouse, dupattas and does not hesitate to include Ikat in any new range of clothing either as a weave or design printed fabrics, especially cotton.

Sarees – The Ikat sarees at Unnati include all three varieties – Sambalpuri, Pochampally and Rajkot. You have the Sambalpuri Tussar jute silk and Ghicha silk, the novel look Sambalpuri mercerized sico and the pure handloom cotton sarees. Sambalpuri sarees are pure handloom in silk and cotton, where the tie & dye is made use of, attested by the accompanying Handloom Mark and Silk Mark accordingly, the silk ones especially including pure charaka silk. Typically it is a field with plain expanses or lightly distributed motifs with contrast borders and beautifully accented pallus. The temple design and the Rudraksha patterns are favourites of the Odia belt and also find their way in the borders and pallus without fail. There is the Pochampally Dupion raw silk range with colorful wide borders and a lot of striped patterns. The Rajkot variety typically has a lot of prints interspersed with the patola weave.

Salwar Kameez – Cotton is a fabric that does justice to the Ikat designs because of the good color adhesion, the accuracy of execution of the designs in the weave. A whole range of light colored length-wise designs that appeal tremendously in Sambalpuri cotton have found their way to an enthusiastic market and been applauded for the unique fresh-feel offerings. The Pochampally variety has its unique positioning when it comes to prints and the stripes, waves, zigzag patterns that typify many of its ranges; give a lovely set of fabrics to explore. The Rajkot cottons are known mostly for their dabbling in prints and the combinations are unique in their presentation on the large expanse of the field, borders and pallu.

Kurti-kurta - The Kurta or Kurti is the showpiece of a dress for it presents itself with the front that either catches the eye or creates an aversion. The Ikat pattern with various combinations of color, border design, pallu designs and motifs provides the needed attraction that a fabric needs to generate to capture the interest of those exploring. Stitched Blouse – Unnati Silks in its creation of new-look fabrics has in a novel range of apparel termed ethnic essentials, transformed the conventional blouse that served only as accessory to the saree, into a new kind of independent and worn combined designer offering with the blouse adorned with the Ikat design. It can be worn as a nice combination to various colored sarees as well as worn independently as a top with the bottom accompaniment to create a fashion offering. Designer necks with embroidery and in several formats, a variety of sleeve lengths from sleeveless to full sleeves, border designs etc. have all added to making it all the more appealing. No wonder it has created ripples in the market when introduced.

Pochampally Ikat dupattas – Like the stitched blouse, the dupatta that came as one of the three pieces of the salwar suit, is now an independent fabric piece that can be combined with various forms of dress to spark off elegance and allure at will. Its broad expanse is decorated with imagery in fast hand painted colors, there are floral themes, imaginative prints and many other such experiments. In fact there is a range of pochampally dupattas which have beautiful self colored designs done through the jacquard attachment that have ‘wowed’ sufficiently.

More would follow in days to come when various other experiments would be ventured upon and provide the market what it always desires – something new, interesting and of value.
