About Mangalagiri Handlooms

Usually Mangalgiri handlooms are made in cotton or cotton and silk mix or mercerized cotton. The saris of Mangalagiri are unique with a heavy zari border and simple mono-striped pallu of solid or striped zari threads. The cloth used in Mangalagiri saris has a crisp finish. The count used in weaving determines the softness or hardness of the fabric. The count in a handloom fabric means the number of threads per square inch. In Mangalgiri the count 80 – 80 is used for soft woven fabric and 40 – 60 for hard varieties. The count makes for the quality of the fabric. There are some designs which are exclusively used in Mangalgiri fabrics known as Nizam designs.

South handloom Mangalgiri cotton sarees are famous for their tightly woven structure, well knit borders, fine stripes and checks. Traditional nizam designs are exclusively used in pure mangalagiri cotton saris. Various motifs like leaf, mango, parrot, gold coin, rekhu adorn this south pure cotton saree.

Raw material used in mangalgiri saree is cotton and gold thread or zari. Nowadays the trend has been to have a lot of prints and embroidery. Count of warp and weft is 80s x80s, width 46” length 5.50 mtrs.

GI – a boon to Mangalagiri

Then came the Geographical Indication status in 2013, a blessing for the beleaguered Mangalagiri weavers.The GI certification is granted only after various inspections and scrutiny where the authorities of intellectual properties wing verify whether the product possesses distinctive qualities. The GI is granted only when the produce is found to be made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin.Mangalagiri handlooms and fabrics have already secured a logo registered for the product and grant of GI has further helped boost the market.
