The last part of the year in India is always festival time, when the air is full of mirth and gaiety, people tending to get light-hearted and livelier than usual. For this is when purchases are made new, from houses to cars to consumer goods to fabrics and when the market obliges with exciting sales and discounts like never before, it gives one the heart to splurge.

Chanderi Salwar Kameez from Unnati Silks

True to form, committed to its loyal customers and for the public at large is a new collection of the salwar kameez in the essentially different weave – the Chanderi. You see two versions of it – one in Sico and the other in Lenin.

Let us see what each has to offer.

Chanderi Sico Salwar Kameez

This is the same Chanderi but in a Sico weave. Here it is an experiment made with different colors with pleasing effects.

What does one get to see in this range?

An extremely plain kameez with a plain salwar in toto - the only thing appearing on the kameez is very small mirror work noticeable but sparsely distributed all over the kameez. The colors of the salwar and kameez are in beautiful contrast of each other, the choice of vibrant shades being chosen.

It is the special Dabu printed designs on the dupatta that hit the eye. In beautiful indigo and white, one gets to see imaginatively created geometrical shapes and floral work. To make matters more heightened, the dupatta has been narrowly bordered on  all four sides in a bright and contrasting color, the same one as that of the kameez, so that when the dupatta is slung over the shoulder and positioned it gets to seem as merged with the kameez seamlessly.

Additionally helping in the allure is a broad border at the bottom of the kameez that also has the Dabu print. In some cases there be different designs of the block prints on all three, two or one of the formed sections of kameez, salwar, dupatta.

The weaving border at the bottom of the kameez is a different touch in some of the offerings.

In both the versions in the Chanderi salwar kameez – lenin and sico, it is an expedition well-travelled. It is the judicious selection of hues that have paid off. Dabu has always been an intriguing process where such beautiful outcomes appear after a very different mud process not seen in today’s methods.

A brief about the enigmatic Dabu Printing process

Dabu printing is a traditional art and an elaborate process in a unique way of dyeing and printing by which exceptional print fabrics of unique appeal result. This mud-resist hand-block printing is practiced mostly in certain pockets in the state of Rajasthan, India. The highlight of Dabu printed fabrics is the use of organic colours and vegetable pastes which are eco-friendly, skin-friendly, fast, and retain their brilliance for most of the lifetime of the fabric. Dabu printed sarees undergo a rigorous process that involves a lot of not so easily available and costly natural dyes and vegetable pastes.

Many countries practice various types of resist dyeing, but the mud resist technique is one that is unique to India.

The response of the market has been encouraging indeed since the above two were launched. It spurs us to move ahead with the confidence that we have anticipated well. This helps us in knowing that we are in the right direction as regards taste and have a bearing on our future innovations.
