The famed traditional Chettinad saree

The Chettinad saree has been one of the oldest traditional sarees of Tamil Nadu, with its distinctive features that still find their way at times into the modern day avatars of the region. The distinguishing features of the traditional Chettinad saree are its seemingly heavy look and the striking colours that are achieved through a deft combination of stripes, checks and colour contrasts. The heaviness is attributed to the historical fact that the saree was worn without other accompaniments and in a different way from what is prevalent today. Interestingly the saree was also said to be of shorter length than the conventional one, exposing the anklet portion of the wearers.

The modern Chettinadu cotton sarees still maintain rudiments of the original version, but have been suitably modified to meet current day needs of the saree-wearers. With the base cotton fabric material and the hallmarks of thickness and huge ‘kandanghi’ borders merged into trendy colourful designs and embroidery it is still able to create the elegant 'Chettinad magic'.

The Chettinad region boast

Chettinad, in the Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, India, which had once had a sizeable population but since reduced to very few villages was once the home of the illustrious Nattukottai Chettiars, a very prosperous banking and business community. Chettinad can boast of its local cuisine (hot spicy food and curries), architecture and temples and of course its traditional fabric – the Chettinad saree.

A region known for its ostentation and palatial constructions, Chettinad still retains what it once was known for in glorious times of yester years. You are still able to see 18th century mansions, wide courtyards, spacious rooms, embellished with marble and teak. The construction materials, decorative items and furnishings were from other countries in Asia and Europe. The mansions were from a special limestone and the walls and floors were polished till they sparkled.

Chettinad has its place in history, a culture that has been envied, its contribution to society and the land always admirably acknowledged. The Chettinad saree is quite a hit whenever a new avatar gets introduced in the market, but more importantly still enjoys its niche position as a fabric worth its price for whatever it offers.

Check out its new line of handloom sarees in pure cotton and creative comfort that till date has never disappointed whenever it has been freshly introduced to the market.
