59th Flimfare Award - Sabse Cool!!

Aired by Sony TV on Republic day it is an awards function to remember. Full of surprises, hilarity, new faces, sensational performances and a lot of awards, this fun-filled bonanza was a refreshing change from its predecessors in recent years.
While there were the usual annual awards handed out for the year 2013, the evening was also evenly- paced with a lot of excitement, surprises, and tender moments.
Notable was that there were many new faces and unexpected winners. A movie like Bhag Milkha Bhag devoted to the once-upon aceFlimfare award 2013 athlete of India, won as many as seven awards, including wins for Farhan Akhtar(Best Male Actor), Best Director(Rakeysh OmPrakash Mehra), Best lyricist(Prasoon Joshi) and the film itself as the Best Film. That too, despite being amidst nominations of popular Bollywood themes that were runaway commercial successes, like Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela.
Ranbir Kapoor has shown that he has become a star, who can hold the stage on his own (A style that reminds one of the mad antics of his ever-loved uncle Shammi Kapoor).  Brilliantly hosted with Priyanka Chopra ably complementing him, they rocked the show. Smooth conducting, no forced comedy, there never was a dull moment throughout. Thank god we did not have tried out duos trying to evoke laughter through inane tomfoolery!  Towards late in the second half Karan Johar took over till wrap-up time.
Giving a futuristic touch to the awards nite, it was shown as a looking back over the years from 2051, with Ranbir arriving as a robot, performing and immediately getting down to playing the host. Priyanka joined later after her equally novel robot dance using the Ram Chahe Leela song brilliantly.
Sensational start and light repartee between the two, the function kicked off to its main itenary, the awards with a lot of entertainment.
You had light romantic comedy. Ranbir holding Rekha’s hand , reciting the lines ‘Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein Khayaal Aata Hai’and coming close to her face to say ‘I love you’ with mock emotion and Rekha equally responding by saying”I love you too. Nobody will ever love you the way I love you”, while the delighted crowd watched the brief encounter appreciatively.
There were moments of emotion.
An emotional Rakeysh OmPrakash dedicated his award of Best Director to his mother whom he had lost during the shooting of the film for which he won it – Bhag Milka Bhag.
Amitabh Bachchan declared his gratitude for a leading actress like Tanuja consenting to be the heroine opposite him despite his being a struggling actor in those days, before he presented her the Lifetime Achievement Award.
A tear filled Honey Irani watched Farhan Akhtar accept the Best Actor award and jokingly say that his mother used to tell him not to move about without shoes in the streets and see where the bare-footed running has led him.
Shahid Kapoor running onto stage to hug his mother when she won the Best Supporting Actress award for Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela.

There were also surprises for newcomers winning awards they had not expected to. The Best Singer female award went to Monali Thakur for ‘Sawaar Loon’ from Lootera despite three songs of Shreya Ghoshal the acclaimed singer figuring in the nominations. Mithoon who won Best Music Director for Aashiqui -2  said "I dedicate this award to my father Naresh Sharma. Twenty four years ago, he was the music arranger for Aashiqui and today, I've won it for Aashiqui 2."
And then there were the mind-blowing stage performances that had the crowd wanting more and more. Madhuri Dixit gave the best of her Kathak fusion which was fabulous because of the setting, costumes and Madhuri’s flawless dance. Ranveer Singh with his dance routine of traditional Kathiawadi in Bollywood style containing a delightful mix of parodies on Sholay 3D figuring Thakur and Gabbar, how it would be if Shahrukh and Salman came together, and also a scene from his own film Goliyon Ki RasLeela Ram Leela, was extraordinary. Others like Deepika Padukhone, Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan did their numbers and regaled the audience.
The mention and respect for the departed souls from Bollywood figured in a slide show. Shockingly this year had veteran Pran, singers of repute Manna Dey and Shamshad Begum, Randhawa, Suchitra Sen, a youngster like Jia Khan, Farooque Shaikh, Producer Sudhakar Bokade and some other names in quite a long list.
If there is something special this year, uppermost that comes to mind is that the beautiful, charming, tall and vivacious Deepika Padukhone with her cheerful countenance has stolen the hearts of all in Bollywood and rightly won the Best Female Actor award for Goliyon Ki RasLeela Ram Leela. She is now an actor in her own right after successes like Chennai Express, Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani and Ram Leela, all in 2013.
The other is Rekha, the ageless beauty, who still charms wherever she is, singled out off-stage by Ranbir, brought on stage to present the Best Female Actor award to Deepika Padukhone about whom she commented "This is one woman I wouldn't mind losing my man to." Did it mean something that we all missed?
Indeed the 59th Idea Filmfare Awards is an eye-opener. Designer backdrop stage and professionally managed sets with a lot of props and back-up artistes like in many other award nites,  this show stood apart by showing exactly what a well-designed, neatly packaged and slickly-presented awards nite is – fun-filled, entertaining and truly memorable.
