When the Father of the Nation was felled by fanaticism

The Father of the Nation, Bapuji or Gandhiji, breathed his last, succumbing to three bullets fired from close range by a Hindu nationalist called Nathuram Godse when on his way to a prayer meeting.
A great soul who was revered and respected by people from all over the world, he fought for ideals like Swaraj or completely free India, strongly advocated the eradication of untouchability, and more importantly stood determined and steadfastly against the British with his credo of Satya (truth) and Ahimsa (Non-violence) that shook their very foundations and helped India achieve its freedom. Popularly known as Bapuji, Mahatma Gandhi was only born in Gujarat; as an Indian he belonged to everyone.
Gandhiji dreamt of a free India with an end to British Rule, he had never envisioned any division of the state. Some misguided souls that formed a small section of the Indian population and who were very much for a separate state for themselves, ensured it through the establishment of Pakistan enjoying a dominant Muslim majority in 1947, separate from India.
Partition saw many riots between two communities when thousands of people on both sides of the border died in the clashes. Some even read it as a deliberate split engineered through Gandhiji’s efforts by suggesting it to the British, and accused him as being too accommodating to the Muslim population who wanted Pakistan to be formed.
Angered over the partition where whole families split and got divided across borders, when thousands took to the streets over the issue, and innumerable clashes claimed many innocent lives, a staunch Hindu like Nathuram Godse was so blinded as to believe that the Mahatma was fully responsible and did this ghastly act without any compunctions.
India lost the man at a time when Free India was experiencing a new high with the end of British Rule; when a new nation was born and coming to terms with itself.
Maybe if he had lived more years, India could have even achieved Ram Rajya, speculate some.
Whatever be, such men do not die, only their mortal bodies are consigned to the flames or buried. The spirit lives on to guide the millions of Indians across the world, to show what honesty and belief in oneself can hope to achieve.
