Mika Singh – Rockstar in his own right

Those avidly following award functions on TV or humming some of the more catchy foot-tapping numbers of Bollywood films in recent times would be surprised to know that many of the popular tunes belong to Mika Singh.
Born Amrik Singh to Ajmer Singh Chandan and Balbir Kaur, this youngest of six and brother to Daler Mahendi, Mika has created a niche for himself with an unusual voice that has matured from the initial nasal twang of ‘Sawan Mein Lag Haye Aag’ in 1998 to the more refined and matured voice of today.
No wonder an actor like Amitabh Bachchan is all praise for him and has openly praised him on Twitter and a Shah Rukh Khan is all praise for his electrifying stage performances. Popular with overseas crowds in many countries having large NRI pockets, people await his lively song and dance routines that have become a bye-word in entertainment.

Now and then he also regales Indian audiences home at award nites where he literally gets the function going on a rocking note at the commencement itself.
Some of his widely hummed and sung numbers include popular rhythmic-jig tunes like Singh is King (Singh is King), Mauja Hi Mauja(Jab We Met), Ibn-e-Batuta (Ishqiya), Desi Beat (Bodyguard), Dhanno (Housefull), Dhin Chika(Ready), Subah Hone Na De (Desi Boys), Pungi (Agent Vinod), Ganpat (Shootout at Lokhandwala) and the widely chanted Chinta Ta Ta Chita Chita from Rowdy Rathore. In fact most of his songs figure as party numbers on account of the lively beat.
In 2013, Wembley stadium came alive with his scorching performance along with Shafqat Amanat Ali and the world-renowned Bolly Flex dance group that had the audience asking for more and more.
Starting wth a single pop album in ’98 Mika struggled to get going with a number here or a number there till 2006 his fortunes changed with the yet popular anthem-like number, ‘Singh is King’. From then on he has steadily lent his voice and climbed the ladder of success to peak in 2013 when he had several crowd favourites that has caused his popularity to soar.
Known for his sudden-changing moods and forthright comments if angered, there have been instances when the singer has lost his cool and given those at the receiving end a piece of his mind with some very nasty and forgettable remarks in reality shows and on stage. But he has also been quick to return to his calmer self and make amends.
He has a website devoted to him and his deeds – www.mikasingh.in that regularly updates for his very many fans what he is currently doing and interesting things about his tours.

Sadly he lost his ailing father to multiple organ failure, very recently. A religious man and a classical singer of Punjabi devotional hymns, his father Ajmer Singh Chandan was the one who encouraged both brothers and inspirational to seeing them both on the road to success.
A man compared unfavorably to his more illustrious brother Daler Mahendi, who was then at his peak and he having just  come on the horizon with an album or two, he has certainly come a long way from that lonely spot to carve out a niche for himself and have a place in the hearts of thousands of fans in India and abroad.
