Movies of 2015 worth a watch

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Like everybody else I too am a film fan or one that takes in movies now and then. Sometimes I also would like to find out about a movie that is being talked about or when some well-meaning friend suggests a title. Based on the current films I have watched in 2015, here is my list of the good and excellent movies that I feel definitely need viewing at least once. They are a mix of the popular, not so well received by the masses and ones that came and went in a flash. That does not matter for me as long as the movie has something to deliver - something that stays with me for quite some time, the theme is about something I believe in, there is something new not seen earlier that interests me. Whatever be, the viewing I believe has always been a value-addition to my beliefs and stimulating to my inner self.

Box-Office-Report-Bollywood-2015

Presenting – My favourite movies of 2015 (in random order)

Star Wars – The Force Awakens

Co-written, directed, co-produced by J.J.Abrams, is the 7th instalment in the Star Wars film series and the first in the star Wars sequel trilogy since Disney took over Lucas film in October 2012. The film 30 years after return of the Jedi is about Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron’s fight with the Resistance, led by veterans of the Rebel Alliance against Kylo Ren and the First Order descended from the Galactic Empire.

A slickly and extremely well-paced outer space movie, one of my personal favourites, for the action sequences, characters, acting, special effects, musical score and emotional drama.

Needless to say that world loves it too since it has broken many box office records, including the sets and highest-grossing worldwide opening of all time and the fastest movie to reach $1 billion.

Talwar

The Irrfan-Konkona starrer, a filmy version of the famous Arushi Talwar murder case, directed by Meghna Gulzar, daughter of Rakhee and Gulzar. The double murder of Arushi and the Talwars’ live-in male servant Hemraj shook us all. How can any parent kill their child? The film– partly like a routine police case, partly enacted crime-drama is as real as a constructed-for-the-camera document can be. All those who have followed the case closely would definitely like to know what other possible angles could there be to the case. Are the parents truly guilty? Is there something that had taken place that the parents could have revealed to the director in their conversations? A must-see for a fresh perspective on an unsolved case, that would interest many.

Baji Rao Mastani

The current box-office hit starring the favourite pair of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone with thePriyanka Chopra is a Sanjay Leela Bhansali magnum opus. Full of costumes, fire and fury from Ranveer Singh, womanly allure and pathos of Deepika Padukhone, with Priyanka Chopra in a more active part than in the previous movie of these three together, this so-called historical drama that has been scripted Bollywood style compared to historical facts of the real Baji Rao, is worth seeing for the grand sets, and a lively portrayal of Baji Rao by Ranveer Singh.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns

For one who has seen all the movies figuring the talented Kangana Ranaut, there cannot be a dull moment with her around. Her way of carrying off a scene, her unusual inputs in anything that she does is worth watching for the sheer talent that she carries in her.

The Kanpur wali Tanu is back. Manu, returns from London. Four years back, in ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, they had met, sparred, and mated. Now, still together, but continuing the enjoyable mayhem they are back to entertain us.

Sequels generally are seen with a feeling of dread that the success might boomerang. Here part II seems even better than part I.

Piku

Shoojit Sircar’s Piku is a special, special film. It is a film about a cantankerous old man grumbling about constipation, a film about a young girl who knows how to drive but chooses not to, and a film about a young man who just can’t bear his mother. Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan starrer, this simply told but well enacted movie endears. Also one of my favourites.

Baby

An elite team of the Indian intelligence system perpetually strives to detect and eliminate terrorists and their plots. Officer Ajay leads a team to destroy one such potentially lethal operation. This is what a review says and that’s what it is. Simple title, simply action, it is one more Akshay Kumar led thriller that never has a quiet moment. Good for one ‘see’ at least.

Drishyam

Unusual story, tense moments, good acting by Tabu as usual and Ajay Devgan in parts, with the suave Rajit Kapur as her husband, this thriller is interesting. A cable operator in Goa living happily with his wife and two daughters in a village has everything cut-out for him; a settled routine life, a steady job and a loving family. Along comes a teenager who creates a ruckus and is accidentally killed. The only one in the village not liking the cable operator, the cop at the police station in the village, seizes this opportunity to arrest and harass him. Drama and tension follows. Definitely unusually unfolding story, that has a surprise ending.

Masaan

‘masaan’ (the colloquial local word for ‘shamshaan’) is about different characters in the city of Banaras where life and death are interwoven and part of everyday life. Neeraj Ghaywan’s debut feature is about life in its stark reality and the way people respond to what is happening to them and around them in different ways that bring about the meaning of beauty in everyday life and its contrasts. The film is just plain story telling simple yet striking in presentation. Must see indeed!

Bahubali

Nothing need be said about this. It is a mega hit that has gone international. Everything is on mega-scale and maybe deservingly it has reached where it has by the awe it creates. Good acting by the cast, a plot that holds, scenes that  have you on the edge thanks to superb graphics and a continuity that prevails start to end. Another must-see if you have not.

NH10

Produced by Anoushka Sharma, who is also the main protagonist and directed by Navdeep Singh it is a movie worth watching if you have the guts for it. NH10 is about a road trip that goes horribly wrong when a young married couple crosses paths with a gang of ruthless killers on the national highway. What NH10 gets bang on is the milieu: the atmospherics, the language, and the tension that creeps up on you that you can’t shake off. Neil Bhoopalam, the menacing Darshan Kumar (Mary Kom fame), Deepti Naval have contributed immensely but what is striking is the potential of Anoushka Sharma as the main lead who takes on the baddies and saves her husband. Saying more will spoil the show. See for yourself. Warning – Darna Mana Hai!

See them all, space them to get the individual feel of each, sort the list and watch in that order. You are sure to be thinking differently about Bollywood talent at the end.
