Known as The IIFA Weekend and Awards, the International Indian Film Academy (as it is ‘fully known as) is a celebration of Indian Cinema showcasing the Indian film industry to the world and promises a week of fun-filled and entertaining activities for those who attend.
First conducted at the turn of the century in 2000, IIFA is held every year in some exotic locale. Starting with the Millennium Dome, London, it has been held at Sun City, Malaysia, Johannesburg, Singapore, Amsterdam, Dubai, Yorkshire, Thailand, Macau, Colombo and Toronto and has never failed to impress the foreign media or the viewers who see a totally different kind of environment of bonhomie and frolic, along with the an ensemble of good selections and the latest from Indian Cinema.
Fans from across the world converge there to view and closely interact with the actors that they normally saw on the big screen. And the rest who do not make it, watch the event from their homes.
A first of its kind – the effort to promote Indian Cinema globally is the outcome of the genius and extraordinary efforts of Wizcraft International Pvt.Ltd., the premier event management and entertainment agency of India.
This year IIFA 2014 held from the 24th of April, 2014, at Tampa Bay, Florida, USA, had Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel, from Tampa Bay as the hosts. A couple very much into philanthropy, their belief is to bring the North American region closer to India through IIFA 2014. The Patels have already earned a sizeable reputation for their laudable work in the fields of health, education, arts and culture both locally and in different parts of the world through their Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel Foundation for Global Understanding.
The 15th occasion, Videocon D2H IIFA Weekend started on a high note as planned. IIFA which is modeled along the lines of the Oscars with a ‘Green Carpet’ replacing the Red one, had celebrities from Bollywood, guests from Hollywood, corporate heads and important dignitaries from India and the USA comprising the people who made it happen. Notables from Bollywood included Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Shahid Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Vir Das, Sameera Reddy, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Ranveer Singh, Parineeti Chopra and Siddharth Malhotra while Hollywood treated the crowd to the awesome presence of John Travolta, the universally acknowledged Hollywood star, Kevein Spacey two time Academy Award winner, Stephen Baldwin and some others Farhan Akhtar and Shahid Kapoor anchored the show.
A fun filled weekend, it had everything that Bollywood had to offer by way of entertainment, insights through forums and a peep into the glory of Indian cinema for the audiences through the big screen.
Kevin Spacey who is known worldwide was a big draw with his impromptu dance moves on ‘Lungi Dance’ with Shahid and Farhan, and the exchange and repartee with Priyanka Chopra in the IIFA masterclass panel that had a spread of topics that included acting, piracy, films and revival of theatre. He also did some imitations from Hollywood films and had a photo moment with Deepika Padukone. The crowd eagerly lapped up every minute of his presence on stage.
Andre Timmins, the Director of IIFA and Wizcraft spoke of his ambition of getting the two woods of film industry, “Holly” and “Bolly” together, which had been achieved with this memorable event. He also appreciated the performance of Kevin Spacey which did much for making it wholesome entertainment that went well with the festive air all around.
There was a more serious note in the business forum of two days that had Harshvardhan Neotia and NR Narayana Murthy along with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and Dr.R.K.Pachauri interacting for the benefit of the crowd. Topics like Film trade, the business synergies, and other areas of interest were appreciated for the import of their content and the relevance to the film industry of the two countries.
The initial night IIFA Stomp had a 5000 strong highly enthusiastic and participative crowd that danced the night, feasted and welcomed the next morning, not willing to lose a minute of the fun and frolic.
Media curtain raiser was a major event which kickstarted IIFA 2014. Joining the governor of Florida, Rick Scott, the Mayor and Commissioner of Tampa Bay, were the bigwigs and top guns of Bollywood. Welcoming the audience on the occasion, the Governor hoped all would make best use of the time and opportunity to enjoy the gala event and briefly touched upon the Sunshine City, Florida meeting the expectations for such occasions to make it a popular destination.
There was a small workshop on the second day conducted by Anupam Kher that touched upon acting skills and the nuances, titled ” I went shopping for Robert De Niro”.
The third day saw more women on stage with the Bollywood likes of actor and social activist Shabana Azmi, actor and singer Priyanka Chopra, Tara Abrahams the deputy director of Girl Rising, a global movement for girl’s education. A movie on the Indian chapter of Girl Rising was also shown. A session on Women leaders Shaping Tomorrow was a major focus on the power of women.
Well liked and applauded was the IIFA Rocks presented by Myntra.com and hosted by the svelte-looking Gauhar Khan and flamboyant Vivek Oberoi. Creative fashion works of leading Indian designers Vikram Phadnis, Manish Malhotra and the American designer Amita Bal were showcased
Manish Malhotra presented a good collection from Shabhana Azmi’s Mijwan Welfare Society, while Vikram Phadnis thrilled with Indian ethnic attire called ‘nazaakat’ for Vishal Fashions. Models were Anil Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Siddharth Malhotra for the Mijwan range.
The next day saw IIFA Expo, a display of B2C businesses from India and the US in areas like property, wellness and tranquility, jewelry, tourism, bridal wear, clothing, handicrafts and artifacts.
Interspersed with musical events, there were performances from Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Monali Thaur, Ankit Tiwari, Bhoomi Trivedi, and the sensational DJ Ravi Drums.
The grand event of IIFA 2014 was the star studded entertainment bonanza from a host of stars from Bollywood like Hrithik Roshan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and many others.

Best Performance in a supporting role (female) – Divya Dutta (Bhag Milkha Bhag)
Best Performance in a comic role – Arshad Warsi (Jolly LLB)
Best Performance in a negative role – Rishi Kapoor (D-Day)
Best Performance in a leading role (male) – Farhaan Akhtar
Best Music Direction – Mithoon, Ankit Tiwari, Jeet Gnguly (Aashiqui 2)
Best Story – Prasoon Joshi ( Bhag Milkha Bhag)
Best Lyrics – Mithoon – Tum Hi Ho (Aashiqui 2)
Best Playback singer (Male) – Arijit Singh – Tum Hi Ho (Aashiqui 2)
Best Playback singer (Female) – Shreya Ghoshal – Sun Raha Hai – (Aashiqui 2)
Best Debutant (Male) – Dhanush - Raanjhanaa
Best Debutant (Female) – Vaani Kapoor – Shudh Desi Romance
Outstanding contribution by an Indian in the US – Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel
Videocon IIFA Super entertainer of the year – Deepika Padukone
Outstanding contribution to international cinema – John Travolta
Lifetime Achievement – Shatrughan Sinha
Star Plus is expected to televise it worldwide sometime in June this year.
