Bandhani Prints - An exotic art that captivates

Bandhani or Bandhej is a tie & dye art that originally began in Kutch district of Gujarat. There were variants found in neighbouring regions too that differed in skill and technique.

The elaborate process

Tie & dye involves creating resists by tying threads tightly at selected points which could number from a few to several hundreds or even thousands based upon the complexity of the design intended, before dyeing the fabric. The tied part does not get dyed and when the threads are removed and the fabric spreads out the design becomes evident by a light coloured design on a dark coloured background. Patterns like Leheriya, Mothra, Ekdali, Shikari are popular and repeated often. Symbols that generally emerge are dots, squares, waves, stripes. The colours generally used in Bandhani are yellow, red, blue, green and black, and could be artificial or natural.

The complex calculation

The Bandhani work exclusively carried out by the Khatri community of Kutchh has created inspirational outcomes. To illustrate, within a metre length of cloth there could be more than tens of thousands of tiny knots each referred to as ‘Bheendi’. Four such Bheendis would together form a ‘Kadi’. It is this complex calculation and exact location on the design that makes for a seemingly bewildering yet logical and painstaking exercise that yields outcomes that surpass the imagination.

Based on the outcomes after the dyeing process is over and the knots opened, there are classifications like ‘Kombhi’, ‘Ghar Chola’, ‘Patori’, ‘Chandrokhani’ etc.

The continuing journey of the Bandhani

Considered to be the oldest and most surviving art form since five centuries, its survival is purely due to the continued enthusiasm of its traditional practitioners and in modern times the added encouragement of patrons who saw and appreciated this sensational art. In current times, it is a must-have with the fashion industry. Though it has originally bedecked the odhnis and shawls of tribal folk, its modern avatar is best displayed on large canvas fabrics like the saree.
