Thane is a city in Maharashtra, India, at the head of the Thane Creek. Thane is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Thane was the terminus for the first ever passenger train in India. On 16 April 1853, the passenger train service was inaugurated between Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Thane. Today It has become the busiest suburban station in Mumbai which handles 6.54 lakh passengers daily. Thane is the headquarters of Thane district one of the heavily industrialized districts of Maharashtra. Too large a district at one time, Thane got split into Thane and Palghar the new creation.

Thane district is also known to be the hub of the exotic and acclaimed Warli handloom sarees.
