• The Victoria Memorial, a grand and stately building that came up with vast donations from many in the British and Indian nobility and also the general public in memory of Queen Victoria who died in 1901, was Lord Curzon’s brainchild that was thrown open to the general public in 1921. The memorial holds numerous paintings of the British Royal family, miniature paintings of the Mughal school, Oil paintings of the Company School, historical artefacts, lithographs and documents of historical interest, post Raj artefacts that are associated with Kolkata etc. There is a laser audio and video show every evening on the lawns which are well-lit up.
• There is the Indian Museum, the largest museum in Asia, oldest in the Asia-Pacific region, situated on J.L.Nehru Road. It has the greatest collection of Indian Natural History and Indian art that easily rivals the Smithsonian Institution and the British Museum. There is also a special library of great historical value owing to the rarity of the books found there.
• The Marble Palace, a privately owned collection of sculptures, paintings and a small menagerie and aviary is full of small and rare treasures in paintings, and also there are more than 50 varieties of marble that decorate the building on Chittaranjan Avenue.
• You also have the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum on Gurusaday Dutta Road that has a rare and comprehensive collection of inventions made in an era gone by, like gramophones, sound recorders, steam engines, road rollers and the like.
