Sensational waves in fabrics created by the Leheria Prints and Shibori

Bandhani or Bandhej is a tie & dye art that originally began in Kutch district of Gujarat. Tie & dye involves creating resists by tying threads tightly at selected points which could number from a few to several hundreds or even thousands based upon the complexity of the design intended, before dyeing the fabric. The tied part does not get dyed and when the threads are removed and the fabric spreads out the design becomes evident by a light coloured design on a dark coloured background. Leheria or Leheriya and Shibori are part of this larger traditional art known as Bandhani.
Leheria comes from the word Leher meaning wave, since the tie and dye process applied to white fabrics, results in brightly coloured complex wave or Leher designs. Leheria work is done on silk or cotton fabric and on long and broad canvases like turbans and sarees.

    Design
  • The design is first conceptualized. The basic motif of the design would have both linear and non-linear patterns, is arranged as an array of combinations within the basic framework. The chosen design gets transferred on paper or a computer page and ultimately onto a plastic sheet.
  • The plastic sheet is run through a sewing machine without thread. A stencil is created with uniform tiny holes all along the outline of the design. The stencil is then laid on a natural unbleached cloth while a duster dipped in kerosene and silver solution is pressed along it. The solution from the duster seeps through the tiny holes marking the design on the cloth. The kerosene used only to serve as a binder evaporates shortly. The silver stain is easily removed by washing the cloth. Thus the design is readied.

    • Stitching

  • The next level in the process is stitching since the coloring can be done only after the shaping of the cloth is done. With the marking done on the fabric, a running stitch is manually made with needle and thread along the design. After the natural fabric has been transcribed with the design, at the two ends of the thread a small piece of cloth is attached that allows the thread to be pulled from both the ends, thus crushing the fabric.

    • Tightening

  • This is an important part in the process. Here, two people are required, one for holding the cloth, the other for pulling the two ends of the thread in opposite directions. The cloth along the thread gets compressed and a knot is then made to bind the cloth, not allowing the color to seep into it (the area compressed by the knot) at the time of dyeing.
  • The right amount of pressure is required to tie the knot as a loose loop could allow the color to percolate into the knot onto the area where the color is not required. When the coloring is done, the entire area on the fabric gets colored other than the spot within the knot which is referred to as a stitch-resist dying technique.

    • Dyeing

  • The tightening completed, the fabric is soaked in a mild soap solution for some time. Thereafter, it is dipped in a bath for dyeing.
  • The bath is prepared in the following manner: the material to liquid ratio (MLR) is maintained in the region of 1:20. e.g. 1 kg of fabric or yarn against 20 litres of water.
  • For the concentration of the color, a 5 per cent description refers to 50 g of color (or any other chemical) to be dissolved in 20 litres of water for 1 kg of fabric or yarn.
  • Apart from indigo, all the other colors are ‘hot processes’, i.e. they require water to be mildly heated while the dyeing process is on. For all the colors, the cloth / yarn is to be kept in the bath roughly for 45 minutes.
  • In natural dyeing, in order to increase the absorption of color as well as for fastness, the concentration of dye should be increased incrementally. e.g. once the 5 per cent indigo bath is ready and the fabric/yarn has been immersed in it, if a darker shade is required then more indigo should be added slowly (1-2 per cent) till the desired shade is achieved. For the various colors, chemicals are mixed with water and indigo and atmospheric reaction with them yields different results as desired.
  • In this process, after the design is transferred onto a natural unbleached fabric and the stitching is completed, the cloth is first dipped into a vat containing the lighter shade of indigo.
  • After the cloth has dried, tightening is done. It is then submerged in a vessel containing the darker shade of indigo. The area around the tightened thread gets crinkled and compressed and does not allow the color to leak in, hence allowing that portion to maintain the original lighter shade.
  • In the shibori technique, the closer the stitches that are tightened into a knot, the larger will be the area where the color does not seep in since the fabric resists the dye all along the stitches.
