The Hand-block – traditional implement that has revolutionized printing on fabrics

Block Printed Fabrics are nothing new, having been around for quite some time now. The extent to which block printing has been developed and exploited with a whole lot of extraordinary variety and range in fabrics by the more enterprising, bears testimony to the tremendous possibilities offered by this extraordinary method of traditional block printing that continues till date successfully.
Block printing is making use of a carved piece of wood or any other type of wooden block to imprint an image on fabric or paper. In the early days of printing, it was used to print entire books. Today the process of block printing is popularly associated with making designs on fabrics by printing on them, with the help of a block made for that purpose.
Block Printing on sarees and other fabrics is a process by which designs are made on the fabric by printing on them with the help of a block with handles or grips made for that purpose.
  • Block printing or hand block printing is popular on account of a number of contributing factors.
  • It has simplicity and ease of execution.
  • There is the sharpness, accuracy and fine detailing of prints made on the fabrics.

    • The blocks used for the printing are made of wood, well planed and smoothly flat. Made of Pear wood, plane wood or sycamore they are two to three inches thick, of different sizes and reinforced by two or more wood pieces of deal or pine.
    The fabric for the prints is laid out stretched tightly on flat tables and then the hand block printing done.
  • Wood Blocks are made commonly from wood like sycamore, plane or pear wood, though wood of other varieties also could be used.
  • The thickness is expected to be at least two or three inches to guard against warping. Additional precaution is also taken by backing it with deal or pine strips.
  • The block is made by creating tongues and grooves to fit in each other snugly and gluing under pressure to make it seem like a homogeneous block.
  • This block is smooth planed and the printing surface is smooth and flat.
  • The design to be incorporated is etched out after applying lamp black and oil on the design and transferring it to the block surface.
  • To achieve fine clear edges of the design the outline of the design on the block is coloured and then the etching is done.
  • Metal copper pieces are wedged into the hollowed out design on the block to prevent caving in of pieces or edges becoming blunt due to the block used continuously with reasonably applied pressure over the laid out fabric.
  • Sometimes coppering is also done by heating the block with the copper strips inside and then removed when the block gets cold.
  • The resulting block would have extremely fine edges and detailing as a single piece of wood. This is the only method by which extremely fine detailed designs are transferred to the fabric. Since block prints require prints to be made in varied colours there are several blocks of different designs kept in readiness.
  • Blocks are dipped in finely mixed colour dye baths and pressed upon the fabric and a slight tap is made before removing it so that the print is uniform.
  • Earlier dyes used were natural and vegetable colours. But today with synthetic dyes easily available, much cheaper comparatively and easy in usage, they are widely preferred.

  • Block printing is a form of textile art that diffuses itself into thriving cultures, at the same time enriching them. In the 17th century, the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and his court were widely known for their love of the arts. This gave motifs in block printing visibility to a wider audience in and outside of India. The British were in India from the early 17th century and were receptive to native culture even before the Raj formally came into being in the mid 19th century. This popularised many floral and vegetal motifs, such as birds and the famous Paisley, or boteh or buta, design that can still be seen in contemporary motifs.
  • Two centuries later, from the mid 1800s, the British Raj led designers from Britain to draw inspiration from these traditional Indian motifs. Thus the widely adored Paisley pattern became embedded into the culture and history of the Scottish town of Paisley, an established hub of the British textile and weaving industry which were ‘Cottage Industries' before the rise of the Industrial Revolution. The states of Gujarat and Rajasthan are regarded as the birthplace of Indian block printing and traditional techniques that are still used in the contemporary designs and colours.
