What is it that the femme’ fatales of Bollywood prefer to wear when it comes to promo functions, as hosts of reality shows or even at award nites? You guessed right. It is the saree.
Despite the world having opened up and a lot of western fashion with jump suits, cardigans and metallic dresses sometimes rampantly displayed, the saree providing a graceful look and distinctive appeal has always been the choice for exclusive occasions.
The Exquisite Chanderi silks, the swishy Tussars, the smooth sway Georgettes and Chiffons, mostly plain and in pleasing light to moderately darker hues. All having attractive motifs and embroidered borders, with minimum fuss is what these young sensationally tall lasses sport. Some prefer it figure-hugging like Katrina, Kareena, Priyanka while some like it more loosely but elegantly draped like Sonam, Sreedevi , Bipasha, Deepika.
With exceptional height and carrying it off well in the beautiful canvas (none seems to be below 5’7” and the popular ones are at 5’9”), the saree allows them a fluid-like motion that shows an ethereal glide whenever they move.
The more sedate types who have been longer in Bollywood would definitely be seen more often in the rich feel, gorgeous-looking pure silk pattus that would seem more of a status symbol and sign of having achieved something. It puts them in a different mould altogether. Hema Malini, Jaya Prada, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Aishwarya Rai, Kirron Kher, Vidya Balan, are living examples.
It is Bollywood that has lead the way and directed the course of fashion in this country and the saree has been given its place in the sun partly because these fascinating divas draped in elegance and allure have sizzled and shone in numerous saree creations either on the ramp for designers or in movies and reality shows for their thousands of female fans to emulate.
