Who would not like good thick hair on the head (unless he or she is tired of it and wants to try out something else)? That glossy mane, those thick black lustrous flowing tresses, that draw envious glances, admiration, amazed looks and even makes heads turn around now and then. Some even sigh out loud regretting their luck in not being so fortunate.
What ails the hair?
Barring the blessed few who grow up and even proceed towards a ripe age with not much to care by way of hair, most of us, are already worrying about the thick crop that we started with and caressed with loving looks daily in the mirror already having a thin path widening with time, till looking at it more than for routine combing becomes a dreaded task.
Earlier it was much later in life, more towards the mid life, somewhere close to 30 years, nowadays half of that. Today with the fast-paced stressful life, bad hair products, nutritional deficiency, and a host of ills plaguing us due to careless habits and gross negligence towards proper health care, it is not till the first onslaught from some corner about the condition of our ‘precious hair’ strikes home, that we do anything about it.
Visits to beauty parlours, scouring the Net, asking close friends, mothers and grandmothers and sometimes venturing out to even ask the lucky ones around, it is a desperate attempt to defy Nature’s order of things. Very few succeed for some time, most start off valiantly, trying out whatever they come across till the will lasts and then when the effort is too much of a bother finally give up.
Go the Nature way and benefit.
Despite our unreasonable ways of living, Nature is still kind in providing us our wishes, if only we opened our eyes and looked around. There are so many things that we use for our cooking and other activities in our daily routine, whose curative or restoring qualities we are just not aware of, that given their indulgence, we could once again be the talk of our circle, if not town.
Here is a wish list that one can safely and surely put to the test immediately.
1. Eggs – full of protein, lot of zip
It is a very good start to make for getting thick hair. Just take two eggs, break their contents into a bowl, whisk properly till you get a thick shampoo like solution. apply on wet hair, allow 30 minutes to 1 hour to pass, then wash it away clean with water and shampoo. Once or twice a week for several weeks at a stretch, the gloss and glow will be noticed apart from good thick hair. An alternative could be a mix of a good oil like 2 tbsp of coconut oil with the egg solution and doing the same as above.
2. Indian Gooseberry – anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and exfoliating
With such properties, the Indian gooseberry can help a lot in maintaining a healthy scalp and better hair growth rate. Mix one tablespoon of Indian gooseberry or amla powder in two tablespoons of coconut oil and heat until boiling. Strain the oil and massage it onto scalp before going to bed. The next morning, shampoo your hair as usual. Do this on a weekly basis.
Alternatively mix one-quarter cup of warm water in one-half cup of Indian gooseberry powder and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Apply the paste on the hair leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing it off. Do not shampoo hair for a few hours. Follow this remedy every few weeks. The Indian gooseberry eaten raw also helps.
3. Olive oil – strengthens the tresses and makes them soft
Massage the hair and scalp with warm olive oil. Leave it on for at least 30 to 45 minutes. Rinse out thoroughly and wash hair using a mild shampoo. Leave the oil on hair overnight. Shampoo hair the next morning.
One can also mix olive oil with some honey apply the mixture on the hair, leave on for at least 30 minutes and then wash the hair. Either of the remedies, once or twice a week, fetches good results.
4. Castor Oil – a favourite with some Indians
Massaging scalp regularly with cold-pressed castor oil is one of the easiest ways to get thicker hair naturally. The high viscosity, coats the hair thoroughly and protects against hair fall. Also, high in vitamin E and fatty acids, it promotes hair growth.
Heat a mixture of equal parts of castor oil and coconut oil. Apply on head and scalp. Massage in circular motions.
Comb the hair to distribute the oil throughout the hair area without tangles. Cover the hair with a towel moistened with warm water.
Leave on for at least one hour. Then shampoo.
Followed once a week will give lustre and thickness.
5. Henna Leaves – Thick hair with natural color
Grind a handful of fresh henna leaves to a fine paste. Apply to the hair cover with shower cap. Leave on for four to five hours at least. Wash hair thoroughly and shampoo.
Henna powder is readily available at beauty parlors. Mix the quantity with sufficient water to create a manageable paste like yogurt consistency. Some use green tea also for good results instead of plain water. Keep paste aside overnight. The next day add contents of a raw egg, 2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice to the paste, mix thoroughly and apply to the hair. Leave in till it dries completely. Wash and shampoo hair.
Gloves are advised to give dark coloration to the skin of the hands while handling the henna paste.
6. Fenugreek Seeds – stopping hair loss and stimulating good growth
Soak 2 to 3 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water for eight to 10 hours. Grind soaked seeds to make a fine paste. Mix 2 teaspoons of coconut milk in it. Apply the paste on the hair and scalp. Allow it to sit for about 30 minutes before washing hair with lukewarm water. Done on regular basis the results are awesome.
The water that the fenugreek seeds are soaked in overnight could be used as a hair rinse. This encourages hair growth, helps get rid of dandruff. Use once or twice a week!
There are plenty of other substances and remedies that people could suggest. But these 6 seem sure-fire to those who have tried and achieved the miracle.
