Ganesh Chaturthi

A favourite sweet preparation of most Indians, and made for special occasions like festivals, weddings and special social gatherings it is relished by all ages. The Boondi Ladoo once again will be in our midst, for it being the favourite of Lord Ganesha, it is made as a special offering during the Puja. Preparing could be tedious to some and the easy way out would be to get it from a reputed sweet shop. But for some the offering with love is in the preparation of the sweet at home itself.

Let us go through the easy ritual and please the Lord how best we can.

What you would need:

  • Gram flour – 1 cup
  • Sugar – 1.5 cup
  • Green cardamom – 6
  • Pistachios -1 tbsp (optional)
  • Melon seeds – 1.5-2 tbsp (optional)
  • Oil – 1 tbsp (for mixing in gram flour mixture)
  • Desi ghee – for frying boondi

Making the Boondi Ladoo

Preparing the batter

  • Take the gram flour on a sieve and get the flour finely sieved.
  • Take the flour in a bowl and add some water slowly. Keep stirring while pouring the water. See that no lumps are formed. Keep adding the water and keep stirring till all the lumps have disappeared. Pour a little more water and oil and whisk the batter into a fine mix. Keep it aside.

Making the sugar syrup

  • Take the sugar in a utensil and add a cup of water to it. See that the sugar melts completely.                                      2014-10-021
  • Keep boiling the water till the sugar disappears completely. Take one or two drops of the sugar solution and check by letting it cool and then feel between thumb and forefinger. If it has about a thread consistency it is done otherwise keep boiling for 2 more minutes till you achieve it.
  • The sugar syrup for the boondi ladoo is ready.

Making the Boondi Ladoo

  • Take the oil in a pan and place on flame. Take the gram flour mixture and stir it nicely.
  • Now placing the ladle with the gram flour mixture about 6 or 7 inches above the pan, pour the batter slowly on top of the sieve with fine holes with the help of a spoon. As the batter falls in the pan on the oil through the holes, the boondi keeps getting ready.
  • Keep heating the boondi in the pan till it turns golden brown.  See that the entire batter is done so with likewise.
  • Now add the cardamom, cashew nuts and the melon seeds in the sugar syrup. Add the boondi to the syrup and stir everything nicely.
  • Let the mix stay that way for half an hour. The boondi will absorb the syrup into it.
  • Wet your hands with some water. Take 2-3 tbsp of the mix into one hand. With the help of both hands try getting the round shape of the ladoo.
  • Make all the ladoos, allow them to dry in the open air.
  • In 5 to 6 hours you will have the Boondi Ladoos dry and ready.
