Benaras is the other name for silk sarees. The Banarasi saris gained popularity during the mughal era. There are mainly four varieties of banarasi sari available today. They are pure silk (katan), Organze(kora) with zari and silk, georgette and shatter.
Benaras is also known as varanasi city, It is also called kashi, the city of light. Banaras is also known as kashi, because of the lord kashi vishwanath temple of lord shiva situated in it. The city holds a great significance in the life of every hindu because of its religious value. Benaras is one of the rich weaving craft centre of India, famous for brocade saris and all over dress material.
During the mughal period weaving of brocades with intricate designs using gold & silver threads was the speciality of banaras.
In the ancient times banaras was famous for the weaving of cotton saree and dress materials. Exclusive varieties of saris are Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tishu & Butidar.
The summer season is however harsh in Benaras. It begins in April and continuing thru june. It is extremely dry and day time temperature often climb up to as high as 45 degrees.
Benaras has stood as a symbol of Hindu renaissance. Banaras preserves the rituals & traditions of hindu philosophy. Piligrims from distant lands have come to benaras in search of divine blessings.
History:
In benaras there are numerous ghats along the bank of ganges. A ghat is a series of well paved steps that lead to the water. For centuries, the hindus considered it very auspicious to bathe at the ghats of Banaras. Every day at dawn, you can see people offering salutations to the sun god in waist deep water in the hope that the muddy waters of the ganges will wash away all the sins of their life. There are five important ghats in Benaras, where the piligrims take a bath. They are the Assi, Dasawamedha, Barnasangam, Panchaganga and manikarnika. Each ghat has its own history. The best way to catch the essence of benaras is to travel down the ganges by boat at six in the morning. Although Banaras famous as a hindu piligrimage centre, one cannot ignore its distinct muslim heritage. The great mosque of banaras is Gyanvyapi Masjid.
One of the most important feature of banaras is the golden temple, dedicated to lord shiva. There is also another temple, dedicated not to the gods, but to Mother India. What it has is a marble relief map of independent India. The father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated the temple.

The Ghats of Varanasi:
In this ancient city of pilgrimage, the bathing ghats are main attraction. People flock here in large numbers every day to take bath and worship in the temples built beside the river bank. Centuries old tradition to offer puja to the rising Sun is still maintained.
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple/ Gyanvapi Mosque:
This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is popularly known as the golden Temple due the Gold plating done on its 15.5 meter high spire.
St. Mary's Church:
Situated in the cantonment area of Benaras (Varanasi) the St. Mary's Church has a low tower, spire and projecting poitico.
Durga Temple:
The Durga temple is one of the most important temples in Varanasi. This temple is built in Nagara Style. The shikhara of the temple is formed by many small spires which are built one on top of the other.
Bharat Mata Temple:
This temple is dedicated to Mother India. Just one kilometer from the Varanasi station. The temple is built in the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth which was built by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt. This temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936 so that the citizens could respect Mother India in statue form. The statute is built in marble. Tulsi
Manas Temple:
This temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. The temple is built in the place where Goswami Tulsidas composed the epic 'Ramacharitramanas' which provides us with detailed description of the history and deeds of Lord Rama.
Ram Nagar Durg:
This museum gives an insight into the grandeur which once prevailed in the fort. On the Ramnagar Pandav road is a beautiful Durga temple. This temple has very delicate and intricate carving done on stone. These carvings are worth giving a look.
Bharat Kala Museum:
The Kashi Hindu university has a museum which has a very rich collection of precious and rare historical artifacts, statues, pictures, paintings and manuscripts. This small but very well maintained museum gives an over view of the ancient city of Varanasi. Entry in the museum is free but check out the timings.
Nandeshwar Kothi:
Nandeshwari Kothi, designed by James Prinsep is a typical building of the early 19th century in Benaras.
Benaras Hindu University:
The university also has the huge Vishwanath temple which was built and maintained by the Birla family. The Sunderlal Medical center has all the modern facilities of medical field is also located in the university campus.
Nepali Temple:
The King of Nepal had built this temple on Lalita ghat in Nepali style. The Nepali temple is also called the 'Kathwala temple'. The temple has some magnificent woodwork. Tourist from all over the world come just to see this temple which has no comparison with any other temple in India.
The workers who carved this temple out were brought from Nepal. The wood used in the temple is also found in Nepal. The speciality of this wood is that termites do not eat this wood.
Jantar Mantar:
The ruler of Jaisingh built an observatory in Varanasi in line with those built in Delhi, Mathura, Ujjain and Jaipur observatories. The Varanasi observatory has all the instruments which were required to record the motion , speed and properties of various stars and planets and other cosmic objects. The observatory was built in 1600 and still the instruments give the exact measurements which were several years ago.

Benaras, on (National Highway) NH2 from Calcutta to Delhi, NH7 to Kanya Kumari and NH29 to GoraKhpur is connected literally to the rest of the country by good motorable, all – weather roads.
LOCAlTRANSPORT:
Taxis: Private taxis are available from travel agencies, hotels, etc., auto rickshaws, cycle rickshaws and three wheelers are also readily available. But per Km. The tourist are advised to fix the fair before travelling.
